KEN STOWELL.   Tributes by Peter Cooper and Claire Scarff

This is an appraisal of the life of Ken who touched the lives of many of the inhabitants of the village. Born in Liverpool he worked in the area until he was called up for National Service in 1950 in the Royal Air force and was posted to R.A.F. Lakenheath where he served his time as an accounts clerk. After service in the forces he returned to his home town and joined the City of Liverpool police until his early retirement when he and his wife moved to East Anglia, staying for a short time in Brandon before moving to Feltwell. He then worked for several years for the Electricity Board in Cambridge until he retired from this position. He was on the carnival Committee in the village in 1977 and in 1988 gave a talk to the Feltwell (Historical & Archaeological) Society, became an active member and in 1991, on the death of the founder member Mr. Alf Orange, he took over the role of Chairman of the Society. He was extremely interested in forming a small museum in the village and was an inaugural member of the bell group which played the newly restored hand-bells, after their return to the village, having been away for almost a century. He was a keen member of the Parish Council for a number of years and also Clerk to the School Governors.

Ken interested himself in several activities outside the village and was a reader for the Talking Books for the Blind, a committee member of the Sandringham Disabled Gardeners Scheme and a driver for the village car scheme. For several years he was treasurer of the Thetford Probus Club and gave talks to several of the Clubs in the area.

He looked after and supported his disabled wife in the latter stages of his life before he succumbed to cancer about two years ago and died aged 77 (on his birthday) on the 18th July, 2008.

This is a short item to say thank you to Ken for all his help to the village during his stay with us.

Ken Stowell was a wonderful historian and excellent at making the history of Feltwell interesting to children. He helped me out on a number of occasions with the Cubs when they were undertaking their Local History badge. Many dreaded doing this badge as it apparently 'sounded boring' but Ken always made it interesting and many cubs went on to find out more about their village simply because, I believe, of Ken's enthusiasm for the subject.

He was a lovely man, always willing to help out and we will certainly miss him.
