Written Records

April 1999

The April update will go online on the 25th. This last month has been very busy and, from the sites viewpoint, very exciting. Two major events have occurred since the middle of March, the first was at the Archaeological and Historical (A&H) Society meeting when we started locating on a old map of the village all those shops and businesses that now no longer exist - some of you will remember some of them I'm sure. We only got half way around the village in 75 minutes and have already identified 41 locations. The other half will be covered in May. When I've sorted the information I intend to put the map on the site and link it through to the Conducted Tour. The second event was all down to Mr. Chris Cock. The Cock's have farmed in the village for many years and Chris has been collecting postcards of Feltwell for a long time now. He saw the site at its official launch in Jan. and agreed there and then to allow me to scan his entire collection. My first opportunity was this Easter and so I've been busy processing just over 100 new postcard images of Feltwell, some of which have been added to the site this month. For a list of changed pages see the What's New page. One extra special item came my way from a most unexpected source. The A&H meeting for April was a tour of Thetford Museum. When we got there the curator had dug out a few photos of Feltwell from their collection. We had seen all of them bar one - a wonderful picture of Tower Mill but with a sign on it - one of a kind, unique as far as we know.  It's on the site this month!

And finally, welcome to all the new members of 'Feltwellians Around the World'. Your various requests and comments have been printed in the village magazine this coming month and if anything rewarding comes back I'll contact you.
