February 2005

On Saturday 15th January a Quiz Night was held in the school hall for the Tsunami Disaster Appeal. Over 120 people attended this hastily arranged event, the brainchild of Mr Ian Webb. He had suggested it a couple of weeks earlier and asked us if we would be willing to run the event. We agreed without hesitation and wheels were put into motion. Mr Richard Brighton was recruited to do advertising posters, Eileen, Marion and Jo agreed to run a raffle; there were so many donated prizes that it took 20 minutes to give them all away! Mr Reeves, the school caretaker, gave his time free and the school donated the hall free of charge. Thanks to the Governors and Mr Kite for this. Numerous people helped cook the potatoes which were kindly donated by Mr Porter and the meal break was awash with chilli, curry, bolognaise, bread and salad from Tesco. Plenty of delicious food for all to enjoy!

The final total raised was £572.25p which will be Gift Aided to the Appeal. What a great place Feltwell is!

What you have just read is how I reported the Quiz Night in February's edition of the village magazine. Last night we had another Quiz Night; this time for the cricket club and although I expected numbers to be low I was proved wrong and £320 was raised after expenses.

A few newsletters ago I mentioned the possibility of a skate park being built on the site of the Community Centre, once it is demolished. Feltwell Youth Action Group has been formed and this is the report from their first fundraiser. They did very well when you consider the date.

"We would be most grateful if you could print a very big thank you to all the people who came along and supported our fundraising morning, at Hill House in Feltwell on December 18th, 2004.

We would also like to thank all the people who donated bottles and made cakes.

The support we had from the villagers was quite heartwarming and we were really pleased with the turnout. We were quite aware that fundraising around Christmas time is not necessarily the best time to try and raise funds.

Please could you say a very special thank you to Coreen Turner, who very kindly suggested this first fundraiser and opened up her home and worked extremely hard on making delicious Mulled Wine and Mince Pies. Without her help the boys would still be scratching around for they’re first fund raising idea!

In total we raised two hundred and seventy three pounds (£273).

Thank you Coreen and the good people of Feltwell.

Lynn Hughes, James Hughes, Luke Jones, John Peckham and all the boy’s in ‘The Feltwell Youth Action Group’."

That makes over £1000 to charitable causes raised by Feltwell in 7 weeks which I reckon is pretty good and makes me proud to be a Feltwellian.

For those of you who remember Dr Nisbet I have to report that his wife, Deannie, is suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome. As Dr Nisbet describes it, "this is a potentially life-threatening condition in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheaths on the nervous system, initially resulting in paralysis of the leg and arm muscles and then spreading to involve the respiratory muscles and those muscles controlling swallowing and speech.

She has had a very stormy and distressing time but I am delighted to say that sensation and muscle power are beginning to return and, although we are looking at "a long job", we are hoping for a complete recovery in time." We all wish her well.

New additions to the website this month include extra photographs of the 1956 Air Show together with the fixing of a glaring error last month! New photographs to Site 2 (Sports Teams and Special Events) and a new photo of The Butchers Arms to Site 1. Many thanks to Chris Cock for these.

In response to email enquiries a couple of months ago I have been able to put Toni Burr in contact with Maurice Green. As a thank you his daughter, Maryanne, sent this short bio and I print it here for all those who remember Maurice. I'm sure he would be happy to receive contact from any of you who remember him. "My dad's name is Maurice "Wizzy" Green. He was born in Hockwold in 1940, but he was raised in Feltwell since he was a little boy. He grew up in 25 Munsons Place. He also went to school in Feltwell when the headmaster was Charlesworth. He still has two sisters and a brother that live in Feltwell. His mother was Kathleen Bird but was originally a Brown. He was buddies with Tony Challis, Kenny Darby, and Mike Young. Before leaving England he was in the first battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. He has been in the U.S. since 1975. He lives in Merrillville, Indiana which is about 40 miles from Chicago. He has one child who is 22 and a teacher in Indiana. He has been married to Diana (Olley) Green (from Brandon) for 41 years."

I have eventually put together a page of photographs from Toni (Burr) Neighbours and wish to acknowledge that I should have done this a year ago but I completely forgot about the pictures until she reminded me. Both Toni and I would like the people in the pictures identified. The photos were found in her parents' belongings after they passed away.
