Written Records

January 2002

Let me start by wishing you all A Very Happy New Year for 2002. Now let me apologise for failing to deliver the mid-December upgrade as promised, I simply ran out of time what with Christmas preparations both at home and at work. One of my New Year resolutions is not to make promises that I may not be able to keep! Whilst talking about resolutions might I suggest that you all make one to recruit at least one new Feltwellian.

Apart from Christmas related activities the latter part of December was a relatively quiet month for Feltwell, especially since the USAF school on RAF Feltwell closed for Christmas. The subsequent drop in the number of coaches travelling through the village twice a day brought a calm and peace to the village that was most appropriate for this time of year. Of course we appreciate the need for the extra security that led to the re-routing of the coaches but all the same it does make for traffic congestion! Let us all hope that the current troubles will not last long and that we can all return to some sort of normality.

It has come to my attention that some of you are unaware of the fact that I print many of your emails in the village magazine. How else could I hope to get answers to your questions? I do, of course, edit them appropriately. If you would like me to not print any email that you send me, and I do only print the interesting ones, please add a sentence to that effect to any future email. The purchase price of the magazine has had to be raised to 40p a month as from Jan. or £4 for the year (2 free issues). I know that some of you already subscribe but if anyone would like a copy please send a cheque for £4 payable to Feltwell PCC - all profit to St Mary's Tower Restoration Appeal. Please send either 12 A5 SAEs or additional payment equivalent to p&p to wherever you are in the world.

I have again been asked to do a presentation to the Feltwell A&H Society on the website. This seems to be becoming an annual event. The Jan meeting, which is also the AGM, will be held at the school on Friday 18th @ 7.30pm. If you would like to come along please introduce yourself to me at some point during the evening. As I am not sure that I will be able to use the school's Internet connection this year (Dave, who usually helped with this left the school last August) I decided to develop a stand-alone CD-ROM based version of the three sites. However, I didn't have the time to rework all the hyperlinks between them but I did need to have some way of accessing them. A fortunate coincidence happened at work. I received an evaluation copy of a piece of software called MindMaps. As a result of my explorations of this software I developed a series of slides that will not only form the basis of my presentation but will also provide me with the all-important method of accessing the three sites off-line. I then realised that the access method would be of great assistance to the Feltwellians. Consequently I have uploaded the entire set of slides. They are not accessible from any currently existing website page, they are only for Feltwellians to use. Try clicking on this link and then click on the small 'onwards' arrow. After a few slides it should be apparent just what is happening. Every MindMap branch is a live link. You might want to bookmark the final slide. Please let me know of any problems. http://www.feltwell.org.uk/feltwell_websites/feltwell_websites.html

As far as website upgrades go I have finally managed to get the entire set of RAF Feltwell related photographs that were kindly provided by Greg Henneman at RAF Lakenheath onto Site 1. Any details about any of the photographs would be most useful. The photos of the Feltwell Post Offices promised for last month are now up on High Street and The Beck. An article, serialised in the magazine, concerning the history of the stained glass windows in St Mary's has been added to Site 2 and Site 3 has had Clough Drive added plus additions to Village Entrances and High Street. Also a page of RAF Feltwell when it was a Thor missile base - Site 1

Family Tree information this month has been sought by Brends (Silver?) who is researching SNOOK, WEBBER, COLEMAN and OSBORN.
