March 2001

Happy March and apologies for a late website update this month. There are two reasons for the lateness, firstly, having used up my free 15Meg of web space it is impossible to add any more old photographs without removing something and, secondly, my Osteopath ordered me to stay away from the keyboard for several days.

I mentioned last month that Robert Walden had sent me copies of some rare photos and that I wanted to put them up on the site. I have nearly finished moving pages around between the two history sites in order to free up some space for the photos and I intend to finish the work this weekend. The photos are of Denton Lodge and Hill House (the home of Rev Daubenay and Jonnie Johnson, the war hero who died recently) and are quite special. I have also spent some time developing a different look for site three even though it only went live at the end of January! Having taken some opinions I became convinced that it was 'garish', something I had always wondered about. Hope you approve of the new look which will roll out over the coming months.

The grim news this month is the foot and mouth crisis that is hitting the country. At the time of writing Feltwell farmers have escaped any problems but are obviously concerned. Entry to the Feltwell end of Thetford Forest at the bottom of the Old Brandon Road has been restricted and people are being asked to stay off farmland particularly if there are pigs or cattle about.  We hope that the authorities can get on top of the spread and avoid a repeat of the disasters of the past.

Tim O'Rorke kindly sent me copies of some old letters from the time that his ancestors lived in the Old Rectory. They concern a farm workers strike and make very interesting reading, providing a unique insight into what was obviously a very painful part of Feltwell's history. He has given me permission to put them up on the site and this I will do over the coming months. I will also be adding to the Parish Councillor list taking it up to the time that yours truly became Chairman.

The weather has been despairingly wet throughout February with large pools of water now standing in the fen fields. It even snowed today! There is no doubt that without the drainage channel we would be seeing a repeat of the Fen floods shown on the website.
