May 2000

The months just keep flying by and, with them, the monthly update deadline. A thought struck me today that these emails are getting to be more like newsletters. I hope that those of you with only distant connections to the village or who live here don't mind. Just ignore everything that comes after this opening paragraph. It has been a very quiet month for Feltwellian applications so I've taken the opportunity to add several new photographs and better versions of existing ones as well as completing the Parish Councillor list. Those of you searching for ancestral details should look at this page. New photos have been added to all sections of the Work and Play Gallery together with improved versions of some of the photos on the Elm Tree, High Street, Tour start, The Beck and Short Lane/Borough pages. The thumbnails, however, I haven't changed so you'll have to go hunting. (Doreen, you should look out for the new Stanley Hopkin photographs, one of him and one of the shop in Short Beck, I think). Some of the photos need names so if anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

The bank has closed despite protests and our focus is now squarely on the possibility of a new pharmacy as outlined last month. The deadline has passed and we await the decision of the area health authority. Keep your fingers crossed for us! The irony here is that the most secure building (for the storage of medicines) has just become available - the Bank. The Council has decided to go ahead and order some fancy new speed warning signs to be situated at two of the three entrances to the village. These light up a warning if you pass them at speeds in excess of the legal limit and, believe me, we badly need them. They have also decided to reinstate the old tennis court which some of you will remember from your younger days. And we've increased the print run of the magazine to 430 as the shops are selling out within hours. You would be amazed at how interesting people find all of your emails. I'm even getting snail mail requests to pass on messages and contact addresses.

The Feltwell Millennium Photo Album is complete - at last! If, nearly nine months ago, I had known what I know now, then I don't think I would have ever started the project. However, I am really proud of the end result and most grateful to all those dozens of people who have helped in some way. If you want to view it then you will have to visit the museum in the village. A few of the photos will appear on the new 'Present Day Feltwell' site which I am hoping to put up in the summer break but I might let you have a sneak preview if you ask nicely! This will be a very differently designed site with no B/W photos and very little text so, if you view webpages with the graphics switched off, then most of your screen will be empty. What is likely to take the time is putting in the links to the two current sites, but that's for another day/month/year/decade!
